Foster + Partners Takes on Furniture: Introducing the OVO Collection

Clerkenwell Design Week saw the launch of Foster + Partners’ solid wood furniture range OVO. Developed in partnership with Benchmark, it is designed to combine craftsmanship with durable design. We take a look at the results

The OVO range was developed following an initial partnership between craft leaders Benchmark and architecture giants Foster + Partners, which saw the furniture company, originally founded by Terence Conran and Sean Sutcliffe, produce bespoke furniture for Maggie’s cancer centre in Manchester, the UK.

As with the initial project, OVO is designed to invoke a sense of home, and is designed for commercial and domestic spaces. The collection places a strong focus on craftsmanship and tactility, with an oiled natural finish and sophisticated, ergonomically centred details.

“The soft geometry of the OVO range not only imbues the pieces with a quiet solidity, but also serves as a compelling invitation to touch, while the boldness and simplicity of its form demands perfection of execution of the craft,” said Mike Holland, head of industrial design at Foster + Partners.

Comprising two dining tables and accompanying benches alongside a sideboard, shelving unit, high table, occasional table and stools, it echoes a wider trend towards craftsmanship and natural materials. It is also available in both oak and walnut.

“Working closely with the craftspeople at Benchmark, we have created a unique range of solid wood furniture that embodies a sense of warmth and generosity, and has an inherent sense of longevity that will allow each piece to gather memories and meaning through successive generations,” added Holland.
