Disney steps into new worlds

Disney’s Star Wars experience has expanded, with guests in future having the option to stay on board a Galactic Starcruiser, the Halcyon. The new intergalactic stop is part of a raft of changes coming to the resort. We take a look at the project and the wider developments set to transform Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Deep sleep in deep space

Disney says guests on the star cruiser will be treated to ‘impeccable service and exotic destinations’. Staying in cabins and even being treated to planetary excursions, fans will be given a taste of the wider Star Wars universe as simulated scenes fly past their cabin windows at lightspeed.

Training new Jedi

Guests on the multi-day stay are set to become part of the ship’s crew, with other experiences allowing them to wield a more elegant weapon for a more civilized age, training with lightsabers like many Jedi before them.

Transforming Disney

Epcot at Orlando is also set for a dramatic shakeup, which they say will bring “the next generation of immersive storytelling to life through a plethora of new attractions and experiences.” A new triple-tiered structure will become a centrepiece of the park, hosting expo’s and festivals for the park's thousands of visitors.

A grand new start

The entrance of the park is also set to be revitalised in a move Disney hopes will breathe new life into Epcot. Adding new green spaces and beautifying the entry is on Disney’s mind as they bring a large part of the park into a new era, pairing nature with design.

Disney said: “The park’s entrance will be transformed with a reimagined fountain, new pathways, and sweeping green spaces that beautify the entryway while paying homage to the origins of Epcot.”

Guardians of the Galaxy

Cosmic Rewind, a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, is set to take on a pavilion at Epcot, featuring a story driven rollercoaster that comes with a few firsts for the park, including a reverse-launching rollercoaster.

Since Disney bought Marvel, it has begun closely integrating its super-hero superstars into its parks. A central part of the new experience will be an app called Disney Genie, aimed at linking together itineraries and events for a smoother stay.

Lakeside reflections

Alongside Disney’s venture into the Star Wars universe, a unique hotel and potential Disney Vacation Club, named Disney Lakeside Lodge, is in development at the Florida resort.

According to the company, the new hotel concept draws inspiration from nature, as well as the iconic artistry of Walt Disney.
