To increase the use of wood as a construction material, Stora Enso promotes fully open and industrialised Building Systems based on building components such Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) or Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL).

Different constructions require different systems and the first Building Systems are for residential multistorey buildings covering construction with panels and modules. 

These systems allow construction up to 8 storeys as a standard version and up to 12 storeys with some adjustments. 

The comprehensive guidelines describe the construction phases from design to maintenance in detail allowing specifiers to understand the way of building with wood and to find feasible options for wood construction. 

The manuals also cover the building physics for different countries and areas like thermal, acoustic, seismic, and fire, and are developed together with recognised third parties.

The systems are open for anyone to access and use, and have been launched in Finland, France, UK and Germany taking into account country specific details.

Stora Enso is developing a digital toolbox to make the building components and systems easily available for architects, designers and other building professionals.

In the first version, designers can find CLT wall and floor components as well as the wall and floor structures as BIM objects (currently only for Revit), and many structural details in DWG and PDF format.

BIM objects combine a lot of product or system specific information, including product properties, geometry as well as visualisation data.

Wood is an unbeatable construction material. Building with massive wood is gaining traction, as it can be cheaper, quicker, cleaner and quieter compared to traditional building methods.

Stora Enso is well positioned to meet the growing need for sustainable, high quality engineered, wooden building components, and has invested significantly into developing new massive wood solutions. 

In 2016 Stora Enso opened a Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) production facility in Finland. In July 2017 Stora Enso decided to invest in a new production unit for Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in Sweden. 

The investments complement Stora Enso’s two existing CLT production units in Austria. 

By combining CLT – which acts like the concrete in traditional construction – and LVL – which serves the same function as steel – we can provide optimised solutions and structures with fully resolved connection details.
