Experimental Transformation: Old Shed New House

The winner of the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2018, Old Shed New House by Tonkin Liu Architects has become the latest under-£1m-budget scheme to be awarded for its innovation. We look at why this transformed architectural shed caught attention

The winner of the Stephan Lawrence Prize, which recognises new, experiment architectural talent by recognising remarkable projects with budgets below £1m, Old Shed New House saw a disused agricultural shed in North Yorkshire transformed into a three-bedroom home.

The project has been praised for using traditional construction techniques and low-cost materials to produce a striking yet highly cost-effective home.

At its core is a vast library, which houses the retired owner’s book collection in a dramatic and stylish space.

“Using sustainable, low-cost materials, Old Shed New House illustrates perfectly what a talented architect can do with a fairly modest budget,” said Marco Goldschmied, founder of the Stephen Lawrence Prize.
